Astronauts headed for Hubble during its second servicing mission in 1997 expected to repair some of the telescope’s outside insulation, which deteriorates in the harsh environment of space. But when they arrived, they discovered more damage than they had expected. Working inside the shuttle, they made patches out of materials in their repair kit.
